A Metropolitan Masterpiece

Designed by Artichoke

Set in West London, this apartment had remained largely untouched since the 1960s. Tasked with bringing it into the 21st century while preserving a refined sense of character, design agency Artichoke was enlisted to oversee a meticulous redesign.

The goal was to transform the inefficient layout and dated decor into a luxurious yet functional home, seamlessly integrating smart technology with timeless craftsmanship. The result is a striking metropolitan retreat with Edwardian and Art Deco influences, where every detail has been carefully considered.

Technology is seamlessly woven into the design. Voice control regulates heating, ventilation, air conditioning, entertainment, lighting and shading, ensuring a perfectly calibrated environment at all times. This discreet integration enhances both comfort and sophistication.

Among the many remarkable spaces within the apartment, the downstairs WC stands as a testament to the power of expressive design within a compact footprint. Wrapped in statement de Gournay wallpaper, this space embraces boldness, proving that small bathrooms can carry just as much personality as larger suites.

At the heart of the design sits Drummonds’ Bourne vanity. Designed with smaller spaces in mind, the Bourne offers elegance without compromising practicality. Its classic proportions and handcrafted detailing make it the perfect centrepiece against the vivid, hand-painted backdrop. The Chessleton basin taps in antique brass add a warmth and depth, reinforcing the Art Deco inspiration.

A masterclass in how to make the most of a small space, the layering of colour, texture and fine craftsmanship is immersive and full of character.

A particularly intriguing feature elsewhere in the home is the Ticket Office; a unique study designed within existing structural columns. Reminiscent of a railway ticket booth, it serves as both a functional workspace and an architectural statement. Adding a touch of whimsy, a secret whisky lift – concealed within a panel – delivers a prized bottle of bourbon at the press of a button, reflecting the client’s appreciation for hidden details and idiosyncratic design.

Throughout the project, Artichoke has masterfully balanced innovation with traditional design elements, incorporating bespoke joinery and hidden technology to create a home that is as functional as it is beautiful. Every inch of the apartment has been designed to enhance daily living, from the hidden laundry zone to the intricate marquetry work in the bedroom.

This is more than a renovation; it is a carefully curated expression of individuality and expertise. A space where historical references, artisanal skill and cutting-edge technology harmonise to create an utterly unique home.
