Château de Bailleul

Restoring Memories, Reviving Elegance

This magnificent Anglo-Norman-style property, built in 1873, is part of the historic Château de Bailleul estate, which traces its origins back to 1543. Passing through several owners in recent decades, its latest residents embarked on a meticulous renovation to restore the house’s grandeur while installing modern comforts.

Originally, the home featured just one bathroom on the ground floor, with additional bathrooms added in the 1970s – after half a century, these areas were in need of a thoughtful, more cohesive update.

The challenge was to update the bathrooms without compromising the home’s architectural integrity, particularly the striking oak columns that form a key part of the original design. The vision for the renovation was deeply personal, shaped by the owner’s desire to return the house to its former glory, inspired by memories from their childhood on the estate. The design aimed to evoke warmth, elegance and nostalgia, while respecting the historical fabric of the property.

A collaboration with talented local colourist Dominique Bouillon brought an artistic touch to the renovation. Together, they curated a refined colour palette and carefully considered decorative elements, such as a mural depicting pompoms to conceal the wooden wall boards – a detail inspired by Féau Boiseries. These thoughtful choices helped to create a cohesive look that paid homage to the past while introducing fresh beauty.

For the bathrooms, Drummonds’ fixtures were chosen to complement the home’s heritage while enhancing its sense of luxury. The designer selected the double Taw vanity suite paired with the undermounted Ness bathtub, clad in a vibrant teal cabinet. The bath alcove lifts the room while allowing the natural beauty of the surrounding woodgrain to take centre stage.

“I first thought I would have to get something bespoke since it was quite a narrow space, however, having now seen the result it seems like the Drummonds’ vanity was made for this room,” shared the designer. With their elegant style and exceptional craftsmanship, the Drummonds fixtures enhanced the space without overpowering its historical elements.

This renovation was not just about updating a home – it was about breathing new life into cherished childhood memories. The result is a seamless blend of heritage and modernity, where every design decision honours the property’s legacy while making a comfortable home for contemporary living. The designer chose Drummonds for its unrivalled quality and craftsmanship, delivering both luxury and a sense of continuity with the past.
