Neutral Elegance

This Victorian 3 bedroom property is located in a highly desirable area of Central Scotland – one of the local area’s most prestigious addresses. The home boasts various period features; high corniced ceilings and large bay windows to name a few, resulting in wonderfully bright and spacious rooms.

In this renovation, Braco Designs were asked to renovate one room in the property. This was the only room which required renovation in the home.

Q: Was this room already a bathroom?

A: The room was originally a bedroom. The room had existing picture rail and cornicing, which we preserved to ensure the traditional style remained within the room, perfectly matching with the timeless Drummonds products. This was to be the main bathroom of the property, and is one of the first rooms seen upon walking into our client’s home, so we made sure that it was a statement bathroom, yet calming and relaxing for the client to unwind in.

Q: What was your design brief, in terms of the overall look and must-have fittings?

A:The initial brief was to create a classic bathroom space in keeping with the Victorian property, which also was to host a calming element to it. It was requested that we incorporated additional storage where possible. Our client had previously viewed Drummonds products within our showroom and fell in love with the handmade sanitaryware from then, so incorporating Drummonds fittings into the bathroom was a must. The client wished to integrate arabescato marble within the project, so we recommended pairing this tone of marble with Drummonds polished nickel brassware, as we felt that it introduced a slightly warmer tone to the bathroom when placed with one another.

Q: Can you talk us through the choice of surfaces + products eg the wall and floor tiles, the wallpaper, the paint colour? Where are they from?

A: The client initially requested a darker black paint for the woodwork, however, after discussion, the panelling was finished in Farrow and Ball’s ‘French Grey’ paint as we advised that it would add a much softer tone to the bathroom, allowing the marble and polished nickel brassware to take pride of place – which it did perfectly. We incorporated limed oak parquet tiled flooring to add warmth to what was once a cold North facing room. Our joinery team built wooden panelling and incorporated additional hidden storage within the bespoke window seat and vanity mirror, which the client loved.

Q: Regarding the bath, vanity + brassware, why did you go for this particular style and finish?

A: The Mull bath and basin taps were specified for their classic look, with the Dunnett WC selected for its concealed solution. In the shower, we opted for the Mull 2-way concealed shower plate, paired with the classic shower rose and hand shower and riser bracket, to match with the Mull taps found elsewhere in the bathroom. Polished nickel was the perfect finish to match with the arabescato marble seen on the vanity suite and shower walls.
