A Legacy Restored

Designed by Rupert Cunningham

Located just outside York, Brockfield Hall stands as a testament to Regency architecture. Originally built in 1804 for Benjamin Agar, to a design by Peter Atkinson, this Grade II listed house has been lovingly restored to ensure its legacy for generations to come. At the end of 2020, an 18-month restoration project began under the expert guidance of Rupert Cunningham, senior architectural designer at Ben Pentreath. Known for his passion for traditional architecture, Cunningham’s vision was clear: to preserve the grandeur and history of Brockfield Hall while maintaining its essence as a family home.

The extensive restoration work sought to remove 20th-century alterations and return the house to its original form. This included reviving historic plasterwork, removing incongruous interventions, and updating key infrastructure with all-new wiring and plumbing. Every detail of the house was carefully considered, ensuring that the restoration work seamlessly blended the old with the new. The newly installed sustainable heating system, as well as the introduction of modern amenities, such as a new kitchen and luxurious bathrooms, brought the home into the 21st century while staying true to its roots.

One of the hallmarks of this restoration was the delicate balance of redecoration. The design team worked to ensure that the interiors played a supporting role, allowing the architecture to shine while incorporating the owners’ personal tastes. With a thoughtful mix of antiques and modern pieces, the home is a beautiful blend of the past and present, reflecting its evolution over time.

Among the home’s restored spaces, the bathrooms stand out as a fusion of elegance and modern luxury. The master bathroom is a prime example of this and features Drummonds’ Wye bathtub, hand-painted in a soft apricot hue, and the freestanding Severn Shower. These stunning fixtures serve as focal points, beautifully complementing the room’s stately proportions and intricate details.

Crafted using traditional methods and the finest materials, Drummonds’ fixtures are built to endure, ensuring they will last for generations; this commitment to craftsmanship reflects the same enduring quality found throughout the house. The seamless integration of Drummonds’ pieces in this graceful setting underscores our dedication to honouring tradition while delivering timeless quality.

Both inside and out, Brockfield Hall speaks of timeless grandeur. The home’s impressive features, such as a cantilevered stone staircase and a striking Venetian window, serve as a backdrop to a large collection of family portraits and antiques. The house is also home to the country’s largest collection of paintings by the Staithes Group, Yorkshire’s celebrated impressionist artists.

Brockfield Hall’s restoration has not gone unnoticed. In 2023, the home was awarded the prestigious Historic Houses Restoration Award, sponsored by Sotheby’s. This accolade recognises outstanding examples of restoration and preservation efforts by private owners, highlighting their role in protecting historic buildings.
