A Sense of Continuity

A Georgian Ensuite Reimagined

Set amidst the undulating landscapes of the Cotswolds, this Grade II listed Georgian manor and its attendant outbuildings – stables, barns and the like – have undergone a meticulous renovation. The project, ambitious in scope and sensitive in execution, sought not only to restore what time had eroded but also to breathe new life into a historic home, harmonising architectural legacy with contemporary comfort.

At the heart of the house lies the principal bedroom suite, now graced with an ensuite bathroom that exemplifies the project’s core ethos: respect for the past, designed for the present. The original bathroom, weary and disjointed, has been replaced by a space that is both serene and substantial – a room designed as much for reflection as for daily routine.

Drawing inspiration from the manor’s original panelling, the new scheme introduces finely crafted joinery painted in a quiet shade of blue-grey – at once nodding to the client’s Scandinavian roots and establishing a tranquil, tonally cohesive backdrop. Layered atop this are polished marble, fluted glass and glinting polished nickel, which lend texture and luminosity without overpowering the understated elegance of the room.

The layout is deftly handled. A sculptural, freestanding bath is flanked by bespoke floor-to-ceiling cabinetry – both symmetrical and satisfying. Flanking this centrepiece are two curved vanity units, thoughtfully designed to maximise space while echoing the curves of the bath. One includes a mirrored façade concealing additional storage, cleverly marrying form and function.

Lighting is deliberately soft and atmospheric: a ceiling fixture by Charles casts a gentle glow over the bath, while a vintage martini table invites the notion of lingering with a book and a glass. Even the accessories have been carefully considered: a bath rack, a selection of artworks and the quiet gleam of heritage-inspired brassware.

Throughout, Drummonds’ fittings provide the essential through-line: the Tamar freestanding bath, classically styled Mull taps and bespoke vanities are not merely decorative but integral to the room’s sense of continuity. Their craftsmanship and proportion feel entirely at home within the Georgian envelope, while their subtle modernity ensures relevance for years to come.

This is a bathroom that resists trend and bravado. Instead, it offers a masterclass in measured elegance – proof that when restoration is approached with both reverence and imagination, the results can be quietly transformative.
