Victorian Splendour Reimagined

Designed by Ezra Candan Saginc

Situated in the heart of South Kensington, this charming Victorian-style flat masterfully merges timeless architectural elegance with contemporary luxury. Under the masterful direction of Ezra Candan Saginc, the property has undergone a comprehensive renovation, meticulously stripping and refreshing every corner. The project included the removal of suspended ceilings and stud walls, installation of underfloor heating, and modernisation of plumbing and wiring, breathing new life into this sophisticated abode.

The previous layout lacked the charm and spaciousness expected in such a prestigious location and so to fulfil the client’s vision, of a splendid sanctuary for two, a complete reconfiguration of the space was essential.

One of the most striking transformations occurred in the master bathroom. Previously a standard, cramped space adjacent to a dressing room, this area has been completely reimagined into a luxurious retreat. The ambitious redesign has created an inviting bathroom featuring a walk-in wet room, a sumptuous freestanding bathtub, and a spacious double vanity. A small dresser area has been thoughtfully retained, achieving a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics.

Careful selection of materials and finishes played a crucial role in establishing the desired ambiance. Large-format porcelain tiles from Iris Ceramica were chosen for the walls and floors, offering a lighter alternative to marble while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic. In contrast, the hand-painted wallpaper from De Gournay introduces an artistic flair and playful elegance, elevating the overall luxurious feel of the space.

When selecting the bathtub, vanity, and brassware, consideration for the property’s architectural heritage was paramount. The impressive four-meter-high ceilings demanded a design that honoured its Victorian roots while integrating modern comforts. The result is an eclectic mix that respects the property’s history while embracing contemporary sophistication. Drummonds’ polished nickel fixtures were selected for the master bathroom, complementing the flat’s innate grandeur. Candan notes, “Drummonds brassware makes you stop and look twice. My client wanted fittings that ooze quality and presence!”
