A Victorian Rebuild in Wimbledon

Designed by O & Co Ltd

British Interior Design Studio O&Co completed a residential project in Wimbledon, South London. A previous renovation from the nineties had left the layout cramped and dated; O&Co undertook a complete refurbishment, restoring the period charm of this of this Victorian family home and rearranging seven bedrooms into a luxurious and four-bedroom layout with generously proportioned bathroom spaces.

The living spaces were redesigned with a modern industrial approach, punctuated by period feature accents. However the clients’ design brief for the bathrooms were to align more closely with the house’s Victorian origins. A spectacular spiral staircase connects the master bathroom to an open-plan dressing area above and was integral to the project’s first concept.

Corné Immelman, founding director at O&Co reflects, “My clients wanted traditional Victorian bathrooms, no shiny sanitaryware or highly polished marble but – most importantly  – they did not want their home to look like a showhouse, which opened the door for me to be adventurously creative. It took almost no persuasion for them to agree to land a Victorian-inspired spiral staircase in their master bathroom.”

Because the room is viewed from multiple angles as the clients descend the staircase, particular care was taken in the selection of surfaces. Honed marble textures are integral to the scheme; a considered contrast between large panels of Alpina white grey and a herringbone block-tile pattern of Verde marl green provides a calm continuity along the walls (both from Mandarin Stone). Robust and imposing, Drummonds’ Grand floor-standing shower pipe complements the architectural drama of the spiral staircase. An antique brushed brass finish gives a depth and subtlety, and is continued to all the shower controls, wall-mounted towel rail, basin fittings and wall lights for a harmonious accent.

The property’s second bathroom has the Swale bathtub as the focal point at the centre of the room, offering a sense of luxury and comfort. Bathed in light from a sash window, the bath has been painted a deep blue-grey to connect the dark marble floor tiles and the fresh pale grey of the walls.

The walk-in shower is unobtrusively framed by an industrial-style glass panel, displaying the iconic Dalby shower. The antique brushed brass finish is also used throughout this space, contrasting against the pale cream herringbone tiles and extending to the Coll bath and shower mixer, Coll basin mixer, floor-standing towel rail and accessories such as the bath rack, shower bottle rack and Dalby wall lights, all by Drummonds.

Of her experience with Drummonds, Corné says, “Fantastic product design, service orientated and on large projects you can work seamlessly with the Drummonds team collating large Sanitaryware schedules. When leading a build, the technical support team for plumbers are fantastic an invaluable to support to any architectural Interior designer.”
