In Orthodox Russia, Easter was the most important occasion of the year. A tradition going back centuries saw Russians bringing hand coloured eggs to Church to be blessed before gifting them to friends and family. The custom evolved through the years and the wealthier of Russian society began gifting valuable, bejewelled eggs. In 1885 Tsar Alaxander III adopted this custom, commissioning his royal jeweller Fabergé to create the most exquisite of jewelled Easter eggs as a surprise for his Empress, and so the Fabergé Imperial Easter Egg was born.
